EECS Ph.D. Student Zhongyang Li Given Ryan Fellowship Award
In being named a Ryan Fellow at Nothwestern, Li will be appropriated an annual $10,000 award ($7,500 as an additional stipend and $2,500 for research expenses), which will be dispersed over three years or until graduation.
EECS Ph.D. Student Zhongyang Li has been selected to receive the prestigious Ryan Fellowship Award. In being named a Ryan Fellow at Nothwestern, Li will be appropriated an annual $10,000 award ($7,500 as an additional stipend and $2,500 for research expenses), which will be dispersed over three years or until graduation.
Li is currently a 2nd year Research Assistant advised by Prof. Koray Aydin in the Metamaterials and Nanophotonic Devices Laboratory (MNDL). His research interest is to design, fabricate and characterize nano-electronic and nanophotonic devices with novel optical functionalities. Particularly, he works on ultrathin-film coating, plasmonic metamaterials and nanoparticle assembly, which enables engineered absorption and transmission enhancement as well as optical-field manipulation at nanoscale.

Li was selected due to his research interests, strong background, and exceptional promise as a scholar. He now becomes one of a very select group of students who have been offered this prestigious award.
His primary responsibilities as a Ryan Fellow will be to demonstrate a commitment to excellence; to pursue his research will integrity, tenacity, and professionalism; and to apply the level of intelligence and creativity toward research goals that will enable Li to fulfill his potential. In addition, Ryan Fellows are required to be a part of the community by participating in program meetings and events, including the annual Ryan Fellows Induction Ceremony, Ryan Fellows Retreat, and quarterly meetings. Each Fellow is also required to give back to the academic community through an annual volunteer opportunity of their choice.
The Ryan Fellowship is made possible by a generous donation from Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan. The fellowship, created in 2007, is to support the finest graduate students in the country and to provide them with the education and experience to assume leadership roles in the realm of nanotechnology. Ryan Fellows will participate in a variety of activities, including retreats, lectures and symposia, and other opportunities to engage in collaborative discussion and research with domestic and international partners.
