Hardavellas Interviewed by IEEE Computer

The full paper appears in the IEEE Computer Special Issue on Multicore Coherence, Oct. 2013.

Nikos HardavellasNikos Hardavellas, Assistant Professor, Director of Parallel Architecture Group at NU (PARAG@N) was recently interviewed by Srini Devadas, Edwin Sibley Webster Professor of EECS at MIT, about his work on Dynamic Directories.

Dynamic Directories are based on the observation that a large fraction of the data traffic inside a multicore processor originates not from actual data transfers, but from communication between the cores to maintain data coherence. Dynamic Directories automatically co-locate the structures required for data coherence near the cores accessing these data, reducing the power and energy consumed on the on-chip interconnect by 30% on average for scientific workloads and by more than 37% in some cases, while at the same time making multicore processors slightly faster.

The full paper appears in the IEEE Computer Special Issue on Multicore Coherence, Oct. 2013. IEEE Computer, the flagship publication of the IEEE Computer Society, publishes peer-reviewed technical content that covers all aspects of computer science, computer engineering, technology, and applications. The interview is available in audio format on the IEEE Computer Societies YouTube page or see below.

This is joint work with Matthew Schuchhardt, PHD Student, Dr. Abhishek Das, (EECS 10' and currently at Intel), Gokhan Memik, Associate Professor, and Alok Choudhary, John G.
