Boeing Awards Grant to ASCE Student Chapter

ASCE Student Chapter won a $4000 grant from Boeing for their 2012 Steel Bridge

A group of energized and dedicated group of civil engineering students revived the Northwestern University Chapter of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) this year.  Membership went from a few students to about 40 in one year.  More importantly, they also designed, fabricate, and construct a 21-ft steel bridge that was competed in the ASCE Great Lake Regional Conference in April.  The Chapter also held an open house to showcase their bridge and to recruit new members.

Riding on their success and enthusiasm, the Chapter has a head start on their 2012 steel bridge with a $4,000 grant from Boeing.  The Boeing grant will go towards the cost of materials and fabrication of the bridge next year.  The Steel Bridge competition has helped the students acquire knowledge in material properties, and design and building a structure that must meet a set of specifications and withstand a minimum load level.  They also have opportunities to improve their communication and interaction with their peers.
