Professor Yonggang Huang will receive the 2019 Theodor von Karman Medal from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). It is awarded annually to an individual in recognition of his/her distinguished achievement in engineering mechanics. It is considered as the highest award in mechanics from ASCE.

Prof. Huang says, “I am deeply honored, particularly when I find out its past recipients from Northwestern University: Achenbach (2010), Bazant (2005) and Belytschko (1999).” Other past recipients related to Northwestern University are JN Reddy in 2018 (NU Simpson Fellow), Huajian Gao in 2017 (NU Simpson Fellow), Ares Rosakis in 2016 (NU Simpson Fellow and NU Achenbach Lecturer), James Rice in 2014 (NU Achenbach Lecturer), Franz Ulm in 2012 (former postdoc at NU), Tom Hughes in 2009 (NU Belytschko Lecturer), Sia Nemat-Nasser in 2008 (former faculty at NU)…

The Theodore von Karman Medal was established and endowed in 1960 by the Engineering Mechanics Division (now Engineering Mechanics Institute) of the Society, with gifts presented by the many friends and admirers of Theodore von Karman. The award is normally made every year on the basis of nominations submitted to the Award Selection Committee. The Award Selection Committee shall consist of the members of the Advisory Board of the Engineering Mechanics Institute whose duty shall be to recommend nominees for formal action by the ASCE Executive Committee.
