Quarter Offered

Fall : TTh 9:00-10:20 ; G. Cusatis/ C. Sun

Prerequisites

None. Although experience with Revit, Solidworks, or other 3D modeling software is preferred.

Description

“Future missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond will require innovative options to shelter our explorers, and we won’t be able to carry all of the materials with us from Earth. NASA’s 3D-Printed Habitat Challenge, a Centennial Challenges competition, seeks ways to create or develop the technologies needed to create such habitats on-site, and challenges citizen inventors to lead the way…” – nasa.gov/3DPHab/

Over the quarter students will divide into teams to research, develop, and improve technologies or models within one or more areas of the competition. Such topics include:

  1. Martian Habitat Design
  2. 3D-Printing Simulation
  3. Martian Concrete (Marscrete) Testing and Experimentation
  4. 3D-Printer Extruder Design and Fabrication
  5. Robot and Systems Controls Programming

Pragmatically, the course will centered on (and student evaluation based on):

  1. Participation
  2. Team Progress
  3. Student Presentations
