The course introduces salient aspects of modern geotechnical analysis based on the finite element method (FEM). It begins with an overview of FEM as a technique for the solution of boundary value problems and progresses to standard problems in geotechnical engineering, including the analysis of settlement, seepage, and progressive failure.

Particular emphasis is on:

  1.  the finite element formulation for coupled problems,
  2.  the implementation of nonlinear material models, and
  3.  appropriate selection of the various parameters involved.
