The Chemical and Biological Engineering Department Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (ChBE ARDEI) is a collection of undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, faculty, and staff stakeholders working on initiatives that bring higher awareness to issues concerning marginalized communities and establish support structures for members of our university community.

Upcoming ChBE ARDEI events will be updated below.

July 13th: Context, Connections, and Community Symposium (C3S)

This career- and networking-oriented event is designed to highlight the scientific accomplishments of graduate students and postdocs focusing on the work of researchers with diverse identities in chemical and biological engineering, materials science, and chemistry.

The C3 Symposium will be on July 13th from 8am-5pm and will address two main goals: (1) to provide a platform for students self-identified as members of underrepresented groups to display their scientific expertise to invited, industrial guests and (2) to provide networking opportunities that will foster professional connections between researchers and companies/professionals in the field. The event will include:

  • Two invited keynote speakers who will present on their work at the Symposium, with the goal of increasing the visibility of diverse STEM professionals in the fields of chemical and biological engineering, materials science, and chemistry.
  • A poster session and talks by graduate students and postdocs from Northwestern University. Monetary prizes and recognition will be awarded for top poster presentations.
  • Invited representatives from local companies will attend both to serve as volunteer judges for the poster session as well as to discuss career opportunities with presenters and attendees of the Symposium.
  • A networking luncheon will be open to all attendees, including keynote speakers, all registered Northwestern attendees, presenting graduate students and postdocs, and local company representatives. This will provide networking opportunities for all attendees.
  • An exclusive presenter networking reception will be held at the end of the day to provide a safe space for graduate student and postdoc presenters to interact directly with keynote speakers and company representatives.

Key to the success of this Symposium is the participation of the talented Northwestern graduate students and postdoctoral researchers in chemical and biological engineering, materials science, and chemistry from backgrounds historically underrepresented. With this in mind, we are looking to gauge interest for participation in this symposium. If you are interested in being invited to submit an abstract, please fill out the interest form here.
