    EVENT DETAILS

The Rise of the Human Microbiome
In recent years, the widespread application of ‘-omics’ approaches using high-throughput sequencing technologies have revealed a microbial world astonishing in its ubiquity and diversity. This technology together with our newer and more sophisticated statistical and bioinformatics approaches have revolutionized our capacity to examine and characterize the microbial world. More importantly, it has empowered microbial ecologists to boldly embark on a journey that tests and extends fundamental concepts of community ecology and phylogenetics. It has also made significant contributions to human biology with novel insights ranging from an enhanced understanding of how microbes mediate digestion, immune and metabolic modulation, and disease processes to surprising associations with Parkinson’s disease, autism, anxiety and depression. For this session, we will focus on the association between microbial dysbiosis in infants and long-term health outcomes - an exciting and an emerging field of human microbiome research. In particular, we will delve into statistical and bioinformatic approaches that inform microbiome-based drug design and development. From birth, humans are continuously subjected to multiple exposures that influence microbiome ecology. Perturbation of the microbiome during this critical period of development may cause asthma, allergy, and other immunologic disorders. Thus, the microbiome may be an important environmental factor that determines the transition from health to disease. A perturbed infant gut microbiome may be altered/returned to a baseline state through the reintroduction of commensal bacteria along with breastfeeding and/or through pre/probiotic formulations. There are a growing number of US Food and Drug ¬Administration trials that are testing the safety and efficacy of pre/probiotics that target illnesses associated with ¬early life microbial dysbiosis such as asthma.
Bio: Melissa received a Ph.D. in biological sciences from The University of Auckland, New Zealand. Her graduate work focused on characterizing the physiological traits that enable bacterial growth and survival in the extreme Antarctic soil environment. Melissa completed postdoctoral training in the Department of Surgery at the University of Chicago with Prof. Jack Gilbert. She worked on several projects that characterized the influence of microbes on ecosystem function in a range of natural and synthetic environments such as forest and city soils, avian guts, mangroves, rivers, and water purification filter membranes. Her primary research comprised coordinating a research initiative associated with the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) to investigate the typical sources, distribution, and functional capabilities of microbes in the Chicago Area Waterway System. Melissa was awarded a NASA Postdoctoral Fellowship to study microbes on board the International Space Station. She then worked as Bioinformatics lead at Commense, Inc., an early-life microbiome startup. She is currently a Senior Clinical Bioinformatician at Vedanta Biosciences, Inc. in Cambridge, MA.
