Getting to Your Own Emerald City: Guidance for Successful STEM Career Pathways
The challenges and complexity of 21st century society necessitate a scientifically-informed US policy, economy, and global competitiveness. To accomplish this, we need top scientists conducting research and disseminating findings broadly and teaching science; science embedded in leadership in all sectors, government, education, nonprofit, and business; and, a scientific-literate public. A broad range of career options are available to PhD scientists and engineers to support such a strong science society. Dr. Holly Falk-Krzesinski will discuss her personal career journey as a scientist and administrator in the pharmaceutical, academic, and research information sectors and how she leveraged her professional network and ongoing professional development opportunities for career advancement. She will share insight about how all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows can plan for a successful career pathway through effective collaboration and networking, and speak about her jobs in research development, research intelligence, and strategic alliances.

Biography: Holly J. Falk-Krzesinski, PhD is the Vice President, Research Intelligence on the Global Strategic Networks team at Elsevier, an information analytics company. Her responsibilities center on how insights from data, metrics, and analytics guide strategic planning for universities and funders, giving voice to research leaders at those organizations within Elsevier to help the business develop and deliver the most impactful solutions to support the research enterprise. Dr. Falk-Krzesinski also focuses on how open science is advancing to strengthen the research enterprise, in particular how universities are developing infrastructure and support for research data sharing and overall research data management across the research lifecycle.

Prior to joining Elsevier, Dr. Falk-Krzesinski was a non-tenure line faculty member and administrator at Northwestern, holding positions in Molecular Biosciences, IBiS, the Office for Research, and Feinberg. Notably, she launched the central Office of Research Development to facilitate interdisciplinary and collaborative grant proposals and is recognized for her leadership in founding the rapidly growing National Organization of Research Development Professionals (NORDP) organization. She also led a team science unit at the NUCATS Institute. Through her leadership with the Annual Science of Team Science Conference, her own research program, and involvement with three national team science initiatives,

Dr. Falk-Krzesinski has been instrumental in developing a strong international community of practice and the field of study called the science of team science. Dr. Falk-Krzesinski is also involved in promoting early career researchers and women in STEM. At Northwestern, Dr. Falk-Krzesinski helped to build one of the most comprehensive PhD trainees career development programs and co-established the Navigating the Professoriate program, along with the Chicago Collaboration for Women in STEM with UChicago. Since joining Elsevier, Dr. Falk-Krzesinski has served on the NIH’s BEST program External Scientific Panel, is co-chair of Elsevier’s Gender Working Group, and co-authored Elsevier’s public report, Gender in the Global Research Landscape. Dr. Falk-Krzesinski continues to teach a grantsmanship course at Northwestern.
