Visiting Assistant Professorship in Applied Mathematics

The Department of Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics at Northwestern University invites applications for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor in Applied Mathematics. This is a one-year, non-tenure-track position with the possibility of renewal for a second year. Duties involve teaching and research in applied mathematics with a focus on applications in engineering and/or the sciences.

Northwestern University offers a stimulating environment, encouraging collaborations across departments and schools. Collaborations of our current faculty span multiple departments in the McCormick School of Engineering, the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, and the Feinberg School of Medicine in areas including a wide range of biology (e.g. genomics, microbiology, developmental biology, neuroscience, biofluids,...), materials science including active matter, astrophysical fluid dynamics and turbulence, complex systems, and social systems, to highlight a few.

Our faculty actively participate in interdisciplinary centers such as the newly founded National Institute for Theory and Mathematics in Biology (NITMB), the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO), the Center for Synthetic Biology, the Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astrophysics (CIERA), the Trienens Institute for Sustainability and Energy, the Center for Water Research (NCWR), and the Center for Hierarchical Materials Design (CHiMaD). The research of the successful applicant will have strong connections to applications and will strengthen and/or broaden the research activities of the department.

We are seeking outstanding candidates who have received a Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics, engineering, physics or another applied math-related discipline, or who expect to do so by July 2024, and who aspire to engage in independent and interdisciplinary research and teaching. The starting date is September 1, 2024.

Applications are to be submitted electronically. The application package should consist of a curriculum vitae, and a second file containing the cover letter, a statement of research accomplishments and interests, a statement of teaching experience and philosophy, and representative manuscripts (published, submitted, or in preparation). In addition, the applicant should arrange for at least two, but no more than three letters of recommendation, addressing both research and teaching qualifications. Recommendation letters will be automatically solicited from the letter writers by email after their names are entered in the online application system.

Questions may be directed to Miso Kim at miso.kim@northwestern.edu (subject line: Visiting Assistant Professor Search). Review of applications will start on January 15 and will continue until the position is filled.
