Hye Won (Nicole) Hwang graduated from Yonsei University in 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology and a Master of Science in Bio-industrial engineering. She first encountered the field of data science during her master’s research on bioactive peptides. Analyzing genome and protein data for her master’s thesis allowed her to develop an aptitude for conveying data-driven insights. Her desire to harness novel insights from biological data to better understand human health fostered her interest in data science. After graduation, Nicole started a project to create a flutter application that can log user nutrition using a deep-learning model and analyze personal nutritional status to recommend supplements. She was involved in every aspect of the app development from setting up a database ERD, building API with Python, training and deploying a deep-learning model on EC2, and creating a flutter application. Her engagement in different roles help her become a skilled communicator and proactive problem solver. She also took this time to take additional academic courses to equip herself with foundational data science skills. At the MSiA* program, Nicole plans to further sharpen her data science skills. She is specifically interested in healthcare technology but is also open to exploring other domains that utilize data science. She is excited to actively network with peers of diverse backgrounds in projects demanding analysis of complex problems from an interdisciplinary perspective.
