Lauren Gardiner

Lauren graduated summa cum laude from Lipscomb University in 2017 with a B.S. in Data Science, a concentration in Business Informatics, and minors in Pure Mathematics and Internet and Social Media Marketing. As the first data science undergraduate student in Tennessee, Lauren pioneered a new degree program that focused on the relationship between data, technology, and people. In her senior year, she was awarded Lipscomb University’s College of Computing and Technology Outstanding Senior and Nashville Technology Council’s Tech Student of the Year.

Throughout her business and computing coursework, she found that this intersection allows her to utilize her passion for creative problem solving and empowering people through information. Eager to apply what she learned in the classroom, Lauren interned during the school year at a Nashville data visualization company, Juice Analytics. There, she designed and implemented custom data applications, bringing clients insight into their business through effective use of data visualization. At Chegg, Inc. in Santa Clara, CA, Lauren served multiple business teams as a data science intern. Her time on the Data Science and Analytics team exposed her to classification problems, qualitative landscape analysis, ETL, and text analysis. For her most recent summer internship, Lauren gained further experience with unstructured data by working at Digital Reasoning. Lauren provided a data science perspective to a team of research engineers exploring a deep learning approach to automatic speech recognition. She focused her research on the stylistic challenges of conversational speech and her work on the language model led to significant improvements on audio transcriptions.

Seeing the impact of her work during three diverse internships gave Lauren the desire to further develop and deepen her skill set through the MSiA program at Northwestern. She is excited to work alongside her cohort, learn from their various perspectives, and collaborate on industry projects. Lauren looks forward to diving deeper into the world of analytics and data science in order to help organizations develop innovative products, make smarter strategic business decisions, and create better customer experiences.
