Michael comes from a rather unorthodox academic and career background. After graduating from the College of William and Mary with a B.A. in International Relations, Michael worked as a manager of a hospital kitchen. Among his major responsibilities was to manage the inventory. He found he could apply the teaching in his undergraduate statistics course to forecast demand for food items on the hospital floors. This experience made him in interested in how data can be utilized in supply chain and logistics settings.

In his post baccalaureate program at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, he fell in love with statistics and was mesmerized by the countless business cases of companies utilizing data science to drive their own business strategy. After he graduated, he joined a SaaS company named Retail Decisions that offers fraud solutions to the online retail merchant industry. There, he developed his SQL skills and from collaborating with the development team, learned how the intricate network of backend databases and system architecture support software products.

With a voracious appetite for anything data related, he took evening classes to strengthen his math and programming bonafides and on his weekends, took every data related class he could find on Coursera. Michael is excited to join the analytics program at Northwestern and to extend his knowledge of computer science and statistics. He is eager for opportunities in organizations that are on the cutting edge of data science where he can grow and learn in this increasingly important and diversifying field of industry.
