Undergraduate Curriculum

48 units are required to be awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree from the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science. Typically a unit is fulfilled by taking a course at Northwestern or through transfer credit from another institution. Credit through AP (Advance Placement) or IB (International Baccalaureate) Exams may also be used as appropriate.

These 48 units are broken down into the following 8 distribution areas:

  • Mathematics - 4 units
  • Engineering Analysis & Computer Proficiency - 4 units
  • Basic Sciences - 4 units
  • Design & Communication - 3 units
  • Basic Engineering - 5 units
  • Social Science / Humanities - 7 units
  • Unrestricted Electives - 5 units
  • Major Program - 16 units
