Winter Quarter 2008 Registration Procedures

All engineering students will have an ADVISING HOLD placed on their winter quarter registrations and this hold will be removed only when the student submits a signed winter quarter study plan to the Academic Services Office, L269. The following is the process for Registration.

Calendar Summary:
October 31st – November 2nd - Sign up for an advising appointment with your advisor for the following week. Blue sign up sheets should be posted on advisors' doors.
November 5th – November 9th - Meet with your advisor at the time you scheduled
beginning November 12th - University Registration

McCormick School of Engineering does not participate in the pre-registration process from Monday, November 5th – Thursday, November 8th. Therefore, unless you are in a dual program that does participate in pre-registration, please ignore the pre-registration appointment times. McCormick students will not be able to register until the university advance registration period beginning Monday, November 12th.

Here's what you do:
Wednesday, October 31st - Make an appointment for sometime the following week to see your advisor. Sign up for an appointment on the blue sign-up sheet outside her/his office. Unless you are a rising sopohomore, your advisor should have your study plan. (Rising Sophomores will need to pick up their study plan from the Academic Services Office, Tech L269 and then sign up with the advisor listed on that study plan.) If you are unsure of who is your assigned advisor, stop by the Academic Services Office in L269 to look at the alphabetical listing of students and their advisors. If you have difficulty setting up an appointment with your advisor, contact the department chair's office.

**NOTES CONCERNING CO-OP STUDENTS: If you are on Co-op and did not submit a signed Winter Quarter study plan, you need to either submit a signed Winter Quarter study plan or email advisor approval of your Winter Quarter courses to the Co-op office. Your registration hold will not be released until you complete one of those things. Co-op students will be registered for the Co-op course by the Co-op office. Students going on Co-op Winter Quarter need to meet with their faculty advisor during this period to discuss Winter Quarter 2007-2008 courses. Return the study plan directly to the Co-op office (Ford 2-350). Co-op students should call the Co-op office regarding Co-op concerns or difficulties with on-line registration at 847-491-3366. The tentative 3-Quarter schedule for the next academic year 2007-2008 can be found at: http://aquavite.northwestern.edu/courseplanner/index.cgi?acadyear=2007-2008

Monday, November 5th - Friday, November 9th- Meet with your advisor at your scheduled time to discuss your program. Your advisor will have your study plan. Have your advisor sign the study plan in the winter quarter section. After seeing your advisor, select the sections, days and times for your courses. The spring quarter course offerings can be viewed on CAESAR after November 2nd. Be sure to select Winter 2008 as the term.

One of the first screens on CAESAR will notify you of any holds on your account. Use this week to clear these up with the departments listed. Our office places a McCormick Advising hold on each student’s registration, which is removed once you turn in your signed Winter Quarter study plan. There may be additional holds placed by the Academic Services Office for other paperwork, so please pay attention to holds and any communication you receive from our office. Any current junior who has not turned in a degree application will have an additional hold. Other rising seniors may have holds for missing theme and specialization forms. Now is the best time to take care of paperwork, as you will be meeting with your advisor, so anything needing signatures can be taken care of efficiently.

Monday, November 12th - Registration Appointments Begin - Find your enrollment appointment online and register on or after that time. Students are permitted to register for up to 4.99 units during the Registration period. McCormick students are permitted to register for up to 5.99 units beginning (but not before) the first day of spring quarter. Those who wish to add a sixth course may do so beginning January 2nd with the permission of Dean Carr or Holtgreive on an add slip.

CAESAR prevents students from registering for classes with a time conflict. Students who must register for a time conflict are to complete the Registration Time Conflict Permission Form, available in the Academic Services Office or the Registrar's Office in Rebecca Crown. This form requires the signature of the instructors of both courses. Once completed, the form should be taken to the University Registrar's Office for processing.

***Reminder to 2007-2008 Graduating Seniors: Please pick up your degree audit in L269 if you have not already done so. Also, a registration hold will be placed on winter registration if you have not submitted an approved theme or specialization form.

Registration Questions:

Why do I have a McCormick Advising Hold?

Each quarter, a McCormick Advising Hold is placed on all McCormick students. This hold is released by meeting with your advisor and returning a Study Plan (signed by the advisor) to the Academic Services Office, Tech L269. The hold is usually removed by the end of the following business day. This is done to ensure that you are meeting with your advisor each quarter.

Can I register for 5 classes?

McCormick students are able to register for up to 5.99 units of credit without needing permission of the Office of Undergraduate Engineering. During the normal registration period, a McCormick student can only register for 4.99 units of credit. Anything over that needs to be added during the drop/add period at the beginning of each quarter. This allows all students a chance at getting into 4 courses before others are adding a 5th course. Anything above 5.99 units will need permission of the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Engineering.

How do I add a class once the quarter begins?

During the drop/add period (approximately the first week of the term - see the current class schedule for specific dates), courses can be added via CAESAR.
