CIV_ENV 415-0: Theory of Elasticity

Description

This course focuses on the mechanics of linear elastic solids. Topics covered include, but not limited to:

  1.  Formulation of the elastic problem for isotropic, anisotropic, and time-dependent materials,
  2. Solution methodologies
  3. Case Study Problems

course objective

The objective of this course is to introduce graduate and senior undergraduate students to advanced topics in linear elasticity. Students will build on the knowledge gained through all mechanics related courses of the undergraduate curriculum (statics, mechanics of materials, etc.).

course outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, students will have an advanced understanding of the linear elastic behavior of solids. More specifically, they will be able to:

  1. Derive the governing equations for 2D and 3D elastic problems.
  2. Solve these problems with various solution methodologies.
  3. Apply the theory of elasticity to problems of practical interest.
