VIDEO: McCormick Alums Create McCormick Research Collaboration Website

In today’s research environment, interdisciplinary collaboration has proven to be one of the best paths toward innovation. No one knows this better than faculty at the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, who, over the past decade, have dramatically increased their collaborations across departments and schools at Northwestern.

Earlier this year, Dean Julio Ottino asked recent PhD graduates Dean Malmgren and Mike Stringer to develop a web site that could portray McCormick’s connections across disciplines. Malmgren and Stringer, who worked in the lab of Luis Amaral, professor of chemical and biological engineering, had created a startup called Datascope Analytics that offers clients a way to interpret large datasets.

Malmgren and Stringer worked to develop a web site that would easily represent McCormick’s research connections. The result is an interactive diagram that shows the number of papers and the number of collaborations that happen between departments and schools at Northwestern.
