The Northwestern University chapter of Society of Women Engineers recently put on the Summer Technology and Engineering Program (STEP) for girls going into eighth and ninth grade to encourage them to explore a career in engineering.

This year’s program theme was sustainability. Participants toured a green roof, created green roof mock-ups of their own, built solar powered robots, and heard from professional engineers.

“Right now, as they’re going into high school, we’re planting that seed hoping they realize their potential, how great it is to be an engineer, and what they can do with an engineering degree,” says Jessica Swenson, coordinator of the program.
