MSIT 490: Databases & Data Warehouses

Quarter Offered

Fall : Saturday, 2:00pm-5:00pm, Second 5 weeks ; Goce Trajcevski, Ph.D

Description

The main goal of this course is to expose the students to the fundamentals of the Data Management from two complementary perspectives:

  1. Databases and Database Systems: a stable and mature technology focused on compact representation of problem domains and efficient queries processing (along with concurrent processing of multiple transactions; robustness; etc.).
  2. Data Warehouses: a trend which is focused on different views; levels of granularity; representation and querying large amounts of data for decision-making purposes in BI

The rationale for selecting the (topics for this) course is that, upon completion, the students should feel comfortable designing databases for a particular requirements specifications, but also feel comfortable about different issues involved in aggregating the raw data across multiple dimensions (and levels of hierarch) for the purpose of posing analytics-related queries.
