Abstract: We give an overview of methods to model pandemic influenza outbreaks. In particular, we use stochastic simulation to model realistic intervention strategies that can be used in reaction to developing outbreaks. The model is constructed to represent a typical midsized North American city. Our model predicts average illness attack rates and economic costs for various intervention scenarios, e.g., in the case when low-coverage reactive vaccination and limited antiviral use are combined with minimally disruptive social distancing strategies, including short-term closure of individual schools. We find that such combination strategies can be substantially more effective than vaccination alone from epidemiological and economic standpoints.

Biography: Dave Goldsman is a Professor in the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech. He received his Ph.D. in the late 1930’s from Cornell, and has held visiting positions at Cornell, Northwestern, Oklahoma, Boğaziçi, Özyeğin, and Sabancı Universities. His research interests include simulation output analysis, statistical ranking and selection methods, and medical and humanitarian applications of operations research. Dave received the INFORMS Simulation Society's Distinguished Service Award in 2002. He also received a Fulbright fellowship in 2006 to lecture at Boğaziçi and Sabancı Universities in Istanbul, Turkey. Dave is a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
