About

Mission

The McCormick Graduate Leadership Council (MGLC) has three main goals:

MGLC mission: Facilitate communication between Northwestern Engineering graduate students and the McCormick Dean's Office; provide students with far-reaching and meaningful leadership opportunities; build a graduate student community among the eight departments within Northwestern Engineering.

History

The McCormick Graduate Leadership Council (MGLC) was founded in the summer of 2006 by two graduate students, Binoy Shah and Megan Greenfield, to promote a sense of community among the 700+ graduate students within the McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University.

With strong support from the Dean of Northwestern Engineering, Binoy and Megan set out to create a council of graduate student leaders representing all eight departments within Northwestern Engineering. Two student leaders from each department were selected to join as members on the council.

Early Accomplishments:

  1. MGLC brought together student leaders of all eight departments within Northwestern Engineering.
  2. MGLC provided the support for creating a graduate student group in the Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) department. This group helps build a community among the CEE graduate students. The leaders of this group represent the CEE graduate students in MGLC.
  3. MGLC leaders initiated the creation of a list of experimental and research related equipment available in Northwestern Engineering. This list enables all graduate students to quickly identify and locate any equipment available in Northwestern Engineering, which they may be able to use for their own research projects. This list serves as a resource and saves time for the students and money for the university.
  4. MGLC initiated and helped the McCormick Dean's Office organize the first ever Dean's reception for new Northwestern Engineering graduate students. The reception served as an introduction for the new students to the Dean, MGLC, and Northwestern Engineering's graduate student organizations.
  5. MGLC inspired and facilitated the first-ever interdepartmental social hour between the graduate students in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Since these early accomplishments, MGLC has initiated and organized many projects and events. Over the Fall 2018 and Winter 2019 quarter, there have been 17 events, (7 events with over 50 RSVPs), with 12 more events planned in Spring 2019.
