Mornings @ McCormick: "Efficiency vs. Learning: A Tale of Engineering Offshoring from Three Shores" presented by Professor Paul Leonardi, Joint Appointment with McCormick's Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences Department and the School of Communications Department of Communication Studies
For many years, service and manufacturing jobs have been offshored to take advantage of labor rates and worker skills in other countries. Professor Leonardi’s research examines the problems that arise when engineers attempt to offshore engineering work on physical products to countries with little experience in the relevant product market. The study suggests that organizations can be designed to improve the efficiency of offshoring for a sending firm, but often at the detriment of learning for the receiving firm. This talk discusses different organizational design principles for offshoring engineering work and how these structures can be used to strike a balance between efficiency and learning.
