Chemical reactions and transformations are occurring all around us. We do not monitor and control most of those reactions, but chemical reactions are at the heart of chemical engineering.
Controlling chemical conversion processes and developing a fundamental understanding at the atomic-scale is vital in a wide array of materials applications, such as the production of pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals, polymer synthesis, production of petrochemicals, silicon processing, and pollution prevention, reduction, and elimination.
Specific research areas pursued in the department include:
- Molecular engineering of synthetic polymeric materials
- Synthesis of novel biomimetic catalysts
- High throughput in silico design of selective adsorbents
- Analysis and discovery of complex reaction networks
