Visiting Scholar Faculty Position

The Visiting Scholar position is a 6-month to 12-month position offered through the McCormick School of Engineering’s Department of Biomedical Engineering. It is specifically designed to provide interdisciplinary collaboration and encourage scientists to realize the full potential for achieving transformative scientific breakthroughs.

The purpose of the Visiting Scholar Program is to enable qualified individuals opportunities to be engaged in intensive study with colleagues, expand research expertise, and enhance their service to the University. The program currently provides support for one faculty member to visit Northwestern University during sabbatical or academic leave through the home institution. In 2016/2017 a minimum of $45,000 in support is available to the awardee.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis for the 2016/2017 academic year. For the 2017/2018 academic year, applications will be due on January 15, 2017.

Submission Instructions

A cover letter including a summary of the proposed project/collaboration and a CV are required in PDF format. Please email applications to: bmevisitingscholar@northwestern.edu

  • Cover letter should include name, rank, department, home institution, and desired length of academic leave (6 months/12 months)
  • Cover letter should include BME collaborator name(s) and affiliations as well as an abstract which clearly outlines the overarching goals of the research project. The abstract should be accessible to a lay audience.
  • Cover letter should be addressed to the Visiting Scholar Review Committee and should be no more than two pages in length.
  • Endorsement by the Dean or Department Head of home institution should be included in the submission.

Eligibility and Obligations

Preference shall be given to those with established research collaborations and interdisciplinary framework.
Completion of a proposal with a Biomedical Engineering faculty member must be submitted at least 12 months before or after the sabbatical visit.
