Albert Berahas Appointed Dr. John N. Nicholson Fellow
ESAM PhD student Albert Berahas is awarded the Dr. John N. Nicholson Fellowship. Albert started at Northwestern in the MS program in applied math in 2011. After a year in Greece, he returned to ESAM to join the PhD program, and is now a 4th year student working under the supervision of Professor Jorge Nocedal, at the intersection of Nonlinear Optimization and Machine Learning. He is currently involved in two projects: Newton and Quasi-Newton methods for Large-scale Machine Learning, and Algorithms for Derivative-Free Optimization.
The Dr. John N. Nicholson Fellowship provides financial support for outstanding Northwestern graduate students enrolled in PhD programs in the sciences, engineering and management. Preference is given to applicants of Greek extraction or descent. The fellowships are named for Dr. John N. Nicholson, a physician who practiced in the Chicago area for more than 50 years. A leader in the Greek-American community, Dr. Nicholson established an endowment at Northwestern University to support academically superior and highly motivated graduate students in selected fields.
