Joe Gilbert graduated magna cum laude with distinction from the University of Minnesota in 2015 with a B.S. in economics, along with minors in mathematics and management. He developed an interest in analytics first through his coursework, and later through an internship experience and independent research for his senior honors thesis.

Prior to his senior year at Minnesota, he interned at Contata LLC, a local Minneapolis firm, where he worked alongside engineers to draw insights from data and organize them into a presentable form for clients. For his thesis he wrote Python code to scrape the web for data on movie reviews and corresponding box office data, then used several regression techniques to model the relationship between the two. After graduation, he went to work for Boom Lab, a local consulting firm. His main assignment here was as a contractor on Target’s development team for the search function of their website. In this role he worked with developers and data scientists to develop and tune algorithms and improve guest experience. This experience solidified Joe’s commitment to learning more about analytics.

In the MSiA program at Northwestern, Joe is excited to build on his academic and professional experience with analytics. He is looking forward to expanding his knowledge of analytical tools and improving his technical skills in order to become a more effective data scientist.
