Mengshan earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Information and Computational Science from Nanjing University with the honor of Outstanding Graduate in July 2015. She was also an exchange student, as well as a member of Fung Scholars, at the University of Hong Kong in 2014.

While participating in the 2013 Shenzhen Cup Mathematical Modeling Summer Camp, she cooperated with two classmates to put forward a practical proposal for revising given agricultural insurance clauses, so as to help reduce risks for both peasants and insurance companies. Her team used the ARMA model to predict the probability of each natural disaster that could occur in 10 districts from the given 14 years meteorological data. This was the first time that Mengshan got a glimpse of “big data” and she soon became fascinated by it.

Since July 2014, Mengshan has been an intern testing engineer at Nanjing 1001hao Automation Technology Co., a startup company in Nanjing, China. Nanjing 1001hao is a community of product designers and makers in China that is now developing the site www.roboocap.com, an Internet entrance where people can access 3D printing and laser cutting services. Mengshan built the testing process of these two web applications from the ground up, including making test plans, writing test cases and conducting Black-box testing. During this summer, she also began learning to use Scrapy to crawl web pages and extract order data for analysis and used Selenium to conduct automated testing as well.

Thrilled to be a member of the MSiA cohort in Northwestern, Mengshan is looking forward to obtaining training in data analysis skills, especially IT skills. She is curious to learn how to integrate information technology and data science to maximize the value of data and is excited to apply these skills to real-world problems.
