L. Catherine Brinson

L. Catherine Brinsonassociate dean for academic and professional initiatives

L. Catherine Brinson manages new Northwestern Engineering initiatives and focuses on the school's professional master's programs.

Brinson joined the Northwestern faculty in 1992 and has appointments in both mechanical engineering and materials science and engineering. She has served as chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and is currently the Jerome B. Cohen Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Her research interests lie in the study of advanced material systems and developing new methods to characterize and to model material behavior.

She leads a successful research lab with diversified funding, including many corporate partnerships. She has a BS in engineering science and mathematics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and a PhD in applied mechanics from the California Institute of Technology.
